If you are currently looking for sponsorship for your band here are a few pointers taken from Simon Tam (Music Think Tank) to help you along:

[Click on the above link to read the full article.]

The Format:

Cover - Make it distinctive. You might consider adding something like “2012 Sponsorship Proposal Prepared Especially For [the company]”.

The Call Out (optional): The second page can be for a large dramatic image/photo or some of the major “bragging rights” stats. Artists can typically use this page as the “one sheet” – a one page descriptor of who you are, major stats or accomplishments, or press excerpts/testimonials from other sponsors.

The Partnership: This is where you want to focus on the main benefits for working with you. What are the main ways you and the sponsor are a good fit?

The Fact Sheet: The nitty-gritty details of your event, tour, or organisation that they are sponsoring. Cover all of the major who/what/when/where/why questions, such as as “What is the event?,” “Where does the event take place?,” “Who is involved?,” “Why should I be sponsoring this event,” etc.

Key Marketing Information: Discuss your niche market, the demographics of your audience (and who you are targeting), how you will be messaging your brand/event along with their company, and talk about successes with past sponsorship campaigns.

Co-Branded Marketing Opportunities: You’ll want to send 3-6 custom, creative pitches to the company that allows for them to visualize working with you. This should play directly off of your niche market/their target audience. The more custom the idea, the higher the asking price that you can fetch. It also helps you stand out from other sponsorship opportunities that only offer logo placement. Marketing folks love creative ways to showcase their brand, especially to an interested audience who they might never be able to reach in any other way. If there is also a “viral” component to one of the ideas, that’s even better.

The Benefit List: List all of the benefits that the company gets from sponsoring you. Put your emphasis on the more custom, creative options and less on the generic commodities that typical sponsorship packages offer (such as logo placement). This is your formal offer so make it as clear as possible on what they can be expecting in return from their sponsorship dollars or in-kind gifts. If you’ll accept a payment schedule, include that as well.

The Sponsorship Agreement: The sponsorship agreement should be easy to complete and return. Details such as a self-addressed and stamped envelope are good. Add an extra bit of professionalism by having this portion printed on NCR (carbonless copy) paper where they can tear off a copy for themselves and send one to you. You can also do things such as adding a QR code or link to a digital version of the agreement.

Duality and the Republic Interview – Rave Magazine

Monday, 20 February 2012

James Verne

The trend of bands putting out their albums for free, especially on Bandcamp, seems to be growing pretty quickly. What’s your take on this?

I personally think that this is the best thing to happen to music in decades. It seems that people are discovering and unravelling the potential of DIY recording, in that it’s far and beyond what it was even ten years ago. You get artists like Converge or Thrice who are have recorded and mixed records by one band member taking the initiative and saying ‘no, we’re not going to pay for studio time and a producer, we’re going to do it ourselves and get the best results’. There’s still a fair bit done ‘professionally’ though. Then you have people like Ben Sharp (Cloudkicker) or Cory Blight (Over-Reactor) who do everything themselves (minus singing) and at a massive capacity, mainly because there are no middle men to slow things down and they have all of the instruments you need to make a record at their fingertips. So artists are finding out how to get professional quality at no cost, and so they’re charging nothing to the listener to obtain it. In that sense, music piracy is probably the best thing that could possibly happen to music, because it’s eliminating the buy and sell factor. I suppose when you have such an easy flow between the creative output and the distribution of the product, then the growth of the movement is totally inevitable.

See interview: http://www.ravemagazine.com.au/content/view/31465/5/

OVER-REACTOR – Mouth Of The Ghetto

(Independent)

Over-Reactor is what Ezekiel Ox – the shouty Henry Rollins of a frontman from Mammal – is up to now. It is still very angry music for very angry folks, but delivered with both a nod and a wink. The video for Mouth Of The Ghetto gives Ox a backing troupe of dancers who jet and shark around Melbourne with him – more men of metal should be willing to join in with synchronised dance moves in their video, it’s certainly more interesting to watch than drummer-face and close-ups of guitar necks. Anyway, the song is all doomy industrial stuff that’s far catchier than you’d expect from video game synth and grinding guitar, while Ox delivers one of his passionate rants ending with, “Fuck Mick Gatto!” It’s a bit odd is what I’m saying, but Christ knows we could use more odd.

Floating Me, Over Reactor, Ennis Tola and Anna Salen @ East Brunswick Club, Melbourne – October 28, 2011 | Live Review – LifeMusicMedia.

To say Melbourne duo Over-Reactor are a polarising couple of musos would be a vast, vast understatement. What started out as a somewhat awkward band with their first few shows has morphed into what can only be described as an absolute force. It appears vocalist Ezekiel Ox has finally found his niche, being the centre of attention given that it is only he and drummer Cory Blight on stage (guitars and bass are run through a laptop). Playing cuts from both of their albums, Ox jumped on and off the stage as he pleased; alternating between snarling in punter’s faces and spray painting various slogans on a canvas, which was later auctioned off for $50. Tracks such as the continually excellent ‘Free Music’ and ‘Point to Push’ went down well with most of the crowd and causing mayhem in the front few rows. In the climax of their final song, Ox decided it would be a good idea to throw one of the tv’s that had been on stage throughout the set into the front few rows, resulting in broken glass everywhere. This only reaffirmed the band’s high energy, high on attitude aesthetic, however it’s fair to say the East wont be having them back any time soon. A crushing and polarising set from one of the most interesting and forward thinking bands heavy bands in Melbourne.
